This is because, for me, the best part about being a nurse are other nurses! We are diverse and unique, yet somehow, we are all able to come together to complete the mission of providing the best possible care for our patients. Amplifying the voice of nurses at a site, state and national level has been some of the most rewarding work of my career. I now had two avenues for pushing forward nurses’ ideas, thoughts and perspectives. I applied for, and was selected as a National Affinity Nurse in 2021, representing the North Texas Market (six Austin area Hospitals). Soon after I took on the SGAC chair role, I learned of another opportunity to serve as a voice for nurses on the national level. This is something our site sincerely needed given the intensity and weight of our work the preceding year. Frontline nurses, in collaboration with our leadership team, were able to implement a handful of well-being initiatives right off the bat. Within those first few months I was blown away by the amount of support our leadership team at ASNW provided our group of frontline nurses from each specialty. I readily accepted the role because I was ready for something new. An opportunity to do that very thing presented itself later that spring when I was asked if I would be interested in serving as Ascension Seton Northwest Hospital’s (ASNW) Shared Governance Advisory Council (SGAC) Chairperson. I knew I wanted to broaden my scope of influence and expand my reach with regard to what I could do as a nurse. I’d been an L&D nurse for about seven years at that point and felt a strong desire for a change. “In early 2021, I found myself feeling a little burnt out at the bedside.
